Bandparent News

Posted in Bandparents' Note, News by Eric Knutson

Marching Band season is just around the corner, with Spat Camp officially starting next Fri., July 24th, for new members and Section leaders, and Monday, July 27th for all veterans.  This is going to be a great season with great music and amazing footwork!  You should already have received a letter from the Directors Carlson about the particulars.  Please read it carefully and have everything ready to go.  We have a few more highlights and dates to list in this post.

Physicals and Activity Packets

Out of 250 band /guard members, there are still 37 students who haven’t turned in all the necessary paperwork.  Please remember that these forms need to be completed before students can take the field for practice.  If you are still in need of the forms, you can pick them up at the LHS office.

Breakfast with the Band - Saturday, August 1st at 8:00a.m at Howard Wood Field.

This is the first view many of you working parents will have of your kids in action.  I have continually been honored to see how proud the students are to have their parents in the audience.  Enjoy a cup of coffee and some donuts while you watch them perform, and take a minute to order some SpiritWear and sign up for some committees.  Oh, and don’t forget the Kleenex!

Family Night at Howard Wood – Friday night, August 14th

You can invite family and friends for a picnic dinner and our own private preview of the show with the entire band in uniform.  After the official show has ended, parents get to go out on the field and follow their students (at tempo) as they march their part in the show.  It’s a hoot!  My advice:  don’t wear backless sandals (very difficult to march backward in them!) and don’t forget the Kleenex!

Band Photos

This year, Great Plains Photography, owned by marching band parents Chad and Becky Phillips, will be taking photos of our young marchers in full uniform.  If you are new to the band, I would like to recommend the purchase of photo buttons, which are religiously worn by many parents to all competitions and events, and don’t forget the fridge magnets for all the relatives.  Photo ops are at McKennan Park on 8/20 from 6-8pm, or at their studio on 8/21 from 6-8pm.  In addition, they will be taking full band and section photos during Family Night at Howard Wood, which will also be available for purchase.  And one final thing:  a portion of the proceeds from these sales will be donated back to the Bandparent Association.

SpiritWear

Show logo shirts are the most striking way to show your pride in our band.  Every school has a different logo shirt and it is exciting to view the sea of matching shirts at a competition.  For the latter part of the season, there will be jackets and sweatshirts with our school logo.  All of these items will be available for purchase at New Member’s Night, Breakfast with the Band, and Family Night.  For your convenience, we have attached an order form with this newsletter.

Classic Cookie Fundraiser

This is the first major fundraiser of the year, and forms will be distributed on the first day of spat camp.  Please be sure that you get a chance to look this brochure over (I usually have to seek this out on my own), as there are some really great items for sale.  Students will earn a portion of their sales to go into their ISA accounts to pay for their marching band dues.

ISA Accounts

In case you’re wondering about this acronym, it stands for “Individual Student Account”.  This account is used to pay for each student’s contribution to food, travel, hotel and supplies for the season.  Into this account go all the dollars earned through fundraising via any of our sanctioned student fundraisers.  The suggested goal for this season is $160.
